FAQs

After WLS, why do you require different vitamins and minerals?

  • The amount of food you eat has decreased.
  • Food passes through the gastrointestinal tract more rapidly.
  • There is a limited amount of hydrochloric acid, which is necessary for the absorption of certain nutrients
  • As a result, the stomach becomes less acidic. In order for absorption to take place, an acidic environment is required.
  • It is harder for foods to be absorbed if parts of the intestine are bypassed.

How does the Stomach change after weight loss surgery?

  • Gastric Sleeve

During a VSG, about 85% of the outer curve of your stomach is removed, reducing your stomach's capacity for food. Due to the fact that the hunger hormone (ghrelin) is largely stored in the stomach area that has been removed, the feeling of hunger drastically decreases after the operation.  As well as consuming less, your stomach contains a very limited amount of hydrochloric acid, which is needed to activate and absorb various vitamins and minerals, so you will need to take supplements of vitamins and minerals after your operation.

  • Gastric Bypass

During a gastric bypass, the majority of your stomach is separated from the part near your oesophagus, leaving a 15-20ml pouch. The intestine is attached to this pouch, bypassing the stomach.  Feelings of hunger are reduced due to less space and changes in hunger and satiety hormones within the gastrointestinal tract.  Additionally, the stomach produces less hydrochloric acid, which is needed to activate and absorb certain nutrients, after a gastric bypass. By bypassing the first part of the intestine, absorption is reduced.

Can it take Calcium and Iron together?

There is a lot of speculation as to if taking iron and calcium together is ok and lots of conflicting information.

We worked with pharmacists and chemists to find a way to keep our product as whole solution.

The problem in taking iron and calcium together is that some studies suggest the calcium interferes with the absorption of the iron. However other studies show with a western diet this isn’t the case. Calcium supplements are unlikely to have a biologically significant impact on iron levels in the long run.

  • The amount of absorption depends on the type and quality of ingredients used.

Our iron is Ferric Citrate each 1 g tablet of ferric citrate contains 210 mg of elemental iron, which could potentially allow for a greater total quantity of iron delivery than ferrous sulphate (65 mg of elemental iron per tablet) without resulting in more adverse effects.

Our calcium is calcium carbonate, Calcium carbonate supplements tends to be the best value, because they contain the highest amount of elemental calcium (about 40% by weight).
